Lesson Plan Ideas and Sites

Film English
From the site: Film English is a site which promotes the use of film in the language classroom. There are lesson plans, a glossary, links and videos to help both teachers and students.

The three main objectives of Film English are:

  • promote the critical and creative use of film in the language classroom
  • promote cineliteracy, the ability to read critically and evaluate moving images, in the language classroom.
  • promote creativity amongst both teachers and students.
Awesome Stories
Stories from classic collections and current events, complete with lesson plans, visual vocabulary builders, and more. Throughout this lesson, students are referred to "A Jury of Her Peers" (this links to the full-text online version.
Story Casting   The idea behind this site is to allow readers to choose their "dream cast" for upcoming film adaptations of favorite books. This can be done without the site, of course, but it's there to give you some ideas.
Lesson Cast   Short (2 minute!) lessons for teachers via video.
Literacy Shed   Many lesson ideas for reading and writing that get their inspiration through short video segments. Some of the older ideas from this educator may still be found here.

Are Online Math Programs Better than Literacy?

From the Article:“We want a child to be able to read a text and derive meaning from that, literally understand what the author is trying to say, make connections between the text and their own experiences, and other text they’ve read,” he says. “That’s what real literacy mastery looks like with comprehension.”... Which begs the question: Why are we using software to teach literacy, if it’s not as effective?
