Uses: Archive Content, Brainstorm and Organize, Collect Feedback, Write Together, Respond and Reflect
Description: Grockit Answers allows students to collaboratively view videos and answer and ask questions as they view.
(You can do a similar, but static, questioning format with a video plus a Google Forms embed; see a math-related example here).
Applications for the Reading/Language Arts Classroom:
- The example in the screen capture (to the right) uses a video montage from Pixar's Up which contains only a soundtrack, and no dialogue. A perfect example for using Grockit Answers to develop inferring skills with students.
- Ask students to make inferences based upon what is shown but not explicitly stated.
- Require students to make a prediction about the video's outcome before proceeding.
- Use a video editing site to compile/cut videos to show just the good stuff.
Sources for Videos:
- Check out the teacher favorites submitted to Video of the Week and Share Your Favorite YouTube Videos for Teaching (you will need to create a free account with The English Companion Ning to view these links).
- Future Shorts is a YouTube video channel containing over 400 extremely well produced short videos. Great for discussion starters, examples of story elements, etc. here is an especially strong one about bullying called Losers.
- Videos with a message at Values.com.
